New Old Release: DC Comics: Generations

Today at your Local Comic Shop:

© DC Comics

This hardcover reprint of Generations: Shattered and Generations: Forged is being called DC Comics: Generations because DC can't bear the thought of putting out a comic without a colon in the title.

According to solicitations, this book contains only those two comics plus the related prequel story from Detective Comics #1027. If you'd bought those three books when they came out like I did, you'd have paid $29.97 (or more, if also like me, you bought multiple covers of each issue... 2020 was a very lonely year). DC Comics: Generations has a cover price of $29.99. Two cents is small price for the convenience of having the whole story in one book.

And while you're at your Local Comic Shop, you'll also find Booster Gold in the Tales from the Dark Multiverse II collection, which reprints the alternate reality horror story from Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Wonder Woman: War of the Gods #1. If that's not enough colons for you, you're going to have to find a different publisher.

The Darkest of All Possible Worlds

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint came out back in December. I ignored it at the time because A) 2020 was dark enough that I really didn't feel the need to spend any more time than necessary in DC's darkest timelines, and B) I didn't expect to find Booster Gold in it.

Turns out, I might have been wrong. (About B not A. 2020 was terrible by any objective standard.)

Take a look at this splash page and see if you see what I see.

That's not the Dark Multiverse's version of the Flashpoint alternate reality, but the alternate-alternate Dark Multiverse Flashpoint reality created specifically by Professor Zoom to... well, his motivation isn't really that important, is it?

What *is* important, at least to Booster boosters is the question of whether this is the Booster Gold of that alternate-alternate reality?

I say sure, why not. The more Booster Golds, the better.

New Release: Death Metal 6

The Greatest Hero The World Has Never Heard Of makes his triumphant return to the world of Dark Nights: Death Metal with this week's issue 6.

If you've got a really high definition monitor and a magnifying glass, you might have spotted our hero in the background of a panel in the issue preview available online at CBR.com, but Booster gets to play a bigger part later in the issue: He delivers a whole line of dialog!

© DC Comics

But that's not the only place you'll see Booster this week. He also gets a cameo on the first page of Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths (which should really be called Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Last Days of the Justice Society, but I digress). You can see Booster in CBR.com's preview of *that* issue.

(Oops. That panel might be something of a spoiler for last year's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Infinite Crisis, if you haven't read that — and I don't blame you if you haven't. These What If? Dark Multiverse one-shots are starting to stack up. How many unhappy endings does one company need?)

And lest you think that you'd have to pick up one of these two issues to get a Booster Gold cameo appearance this week, think again. Booster is appearing in all the DC books this week in the house ad for Generations: Shattered #1. Here's the important bit:

That's a lot of Gold!

Buy any book from DC this week and make Skeets happy.

New Release: TftDM:WW:WotG

I didn't expect to find Booster Gold in any of today's comics, so imagine my surprise when I spotted this fine looking group:

© DC Comics

That's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Wonder Woman: War of the Gods #1, the "Dark Multiverse" version of the 1991 "War of the Gods" crossover event. Ironically, Booster appears in three panels in this self-contained one-shot issue, which is two more panels than he appeared in during the original 25-part story!

For the record, it was this panel in War of the Gods #4:

As you can see, the original story had layouts by George Perez. It is a dark multiverse indeed without George Perez in it.

If you'd like to see more of Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Wonder Woman: War of the Gods before you decide whether you want to spend $6 on a Booster Gold cameo appearance, CBR.com has the preview.

New Release: Year of the Villain Hell Arisen 3

Hey, kids! Today's your first second chance to buy November's Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Infinite Crisis #1 one-shot, as it is included in Tales form the Dark Multiverse hardcover collection. Better late than never.

Speaking of reprints, if you're the sort of person who reads comic book related news sites — either for fun or because you run a website devoted to a comic book character who only sporadically appears as a background character in other books and you're always looking for new content — you may have heard that today's Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 went to a second printing two weeks before the issue was ever released!

Believe it or not, that post-Final Order Cut-off/pre-New Release sellout happened because DC failed to mention in the solicitations provided to the stores that a certain super-popular character appears in it.

That character is sadly NOT Booster Gold.

Per DC's February 11 press release at dccomics.com:

The debut of Punchline, the Joker's deadly new henchperson, has led to pre-on sale sellouts of both Batman #89 and Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3—and now, DC announces that these issues, both written by James Tynion IV—are rushing back to press for second printings!

Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3's second printing covers the confrontation between Lex Luthor and The Joker, with help from Punchline and Mercy, as the conflict between the forces of Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs reaches the boiling point. Written by Tynion IV with art by Steve Epting, this issue will arrive in stores with a recolored version of its original cover by Epting.

The second printings of Batman #89 and Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 will both be published on March 4. If the comics aren't already on your pull lists, contact your local comic book shop and let them know you're looking for these issues to be added!

For the record, no one knew this milked cash cow "Punchline" character would be in these two books until DC announced it... on February 7. Hint to DC: if you want people to buy your comics in the specialty shops dedicated to your product, maybe you should tell us about them before those stores have to place their orders from you. Otherwise, you're kind of shooting yourself in the foot. You won't make a single penny on the two or more (or much more) times cover price I'll now be paying for a first edition printing of a new Booster Gold comic book, so you end up losing money and angering fans. That's good business, he says sarcastically.

Sigh. Oh, well. I guess it's just one last thing I can blame on newly ex-publisher Dan "don't let the door hit you on the way out" DiDio. (Double sigh. Now who am I going to blame for everything I don't like about DC Comics?)

If you can find it for a reasonable price, buy this issue and make Skeets happy.
